Running A (Aspiring) Full Time Blog With A Full Time Job

At the start of the year, and towards the end of last year, I committed myself to making this blog a full-time (to an extent) deal because I really love creating content that I'm passionate about. And I still have that mindset, but let me tell you it's much harder to do when you have a full time job.

Ah yes, the dreaded life of an adult.

To be honest though, I cannot even complain. I have such an amazing job (for my first paid job ever) and I've been working in this position since June last year. It was kind of a miracle how it happened, I won't get into the details of it but long story short - I applied, two days later I got the job and they haven't got rid of me. Thank God.

A major pro to my job is the fact that I work in fashion. Better yet, designer fashion (eek!). It's the best place for me. I've always been a lover of high end fashion, thanks to my Mumma's amazing taste and it's such a joy to work with some of my favourite brands and find new ones to love. It means I get to see all the latest collections and pieces that brands have to offer. I'm surrounded by one of my biggest passions from a 9am to 6pm basis.

But here's the con - it takes up a lot of my time. The long days during the week mean I don't have a lot of free time to shoot or write or create content (I'm currently using my lunch hour to work on this). So I have to shift everything to the weekends when it comes to the blog, but I sometimes work weekends too because my job is just that busy. Take this past weekend for example, I was all pumped to shoot a whole bunch for the blog but I ended up having to work Saturday and Sunday. The demand was there and I stepped up, as always. Sadly that meant pushing the blog onto the back bench, which didn't make me to happy.

When I commit myself to something, I like to see it through. So when I said to myself, "right, two posts a week - do able and will be done", I was set out to do it but then work just kept me occupied. Being in Sri Lanka means I have to work on a weird time too and I end up working extra hours so that as much of my time awake overlaps with the UK.

There's a lot that goes on with this job and my daily targets are a lot, so that means I do have to focus on that first. In order to actually do well with my blog, I have to be able to support myself fully. You see all these bloggers out their with their amazing platforms and they blog because it's their job now. They've probably had to do what I'm doing now at some point too. Until I actually establish myself and take my blog as seriously as I want it to be, then I have to work full time whilst being a full time blogger.

I'm not sure if there any of you out there who are in the same situation or debating the back to back full-time, but I thought I'd share a few tips with you to just make doing both a little easier.

1. Whatever breaks you get, use them. I can't stress enough how the littlest few minutes can mean getting one or a few outfit shots for your Instagram or blog, just for the update to keep your audience engaged. I don't have a massive audience, but I make sure that they continue to follow me even with the most unnecessary update.

2. Plan ahead. Keep a diary, a planner or just a sheet of paper by you. Jot down any ideas that you have and make sure that you tick them off as you go. I find that planning (even in the Notes app on my iPhone) can help bring the content to life that much easier. Whatever idea you have, don't let it slip away.

3. Be patient. Patience is something that you have to have. Don't create a competition in your head with the top bloggers out there because they've worked years to get to the job title of a "Full Time Blogger". I do this exact thing and I have to realise that patience, hard work and determination are the only thing that are going to get you where you want to be.

These are just the main three things that I'm keeping in mind as I move forward to create content and so far, I think they are working. I've planned a bunch of new, exciting things that I hope to work on soon and I know that I might not be able to reach my goals instantly, but I'll work my way there.

I hope this helps any of you who needs it and for anyone who wanted to know where I've been, well now you know.

Lots of love,

Emily xx
