What I'm Doing To Look After Myself Right Now

Outfit: Nike

Everyone’s going through their own motions at the moment, whether it be by by their own circumstances or that of the world because let’s face it, I don’t think we ever had as collective as an experience than that which has been the last year.

Some of us are in lockdown again (my Sri Lankan and Aussie loves, especially Melbourne, I feel for you), some of us are transitioning back to “normality” (England, I’m talking about you girl and oh do I miss a pub garden right now). Whatever it is, we’re all making little changes and as we do, it’s important we do little things to look after ourselves. Here’s a few things I’ve been doing to keep myself happy and energised when things are a bit tough.

1. Moving My Body

I dropped off the wagon on this one for a little. From January, I was on a roll with my fitness, working out 5-6 days a week and I moved into HIIT for the first time properly, loving every minute of it. And then a few weeks ago I went flat, just lost my stamina and motivation. But I made an effort to move somehow, even if it was less times a week. I’ve slowly worked my way back in, taking it easier because honestly I think I burnt out, and now I’m just making sure that I move my body. Whether it’s for 10, 20, 30, or 45 mins, or even an hour, I move. And it’s exhilarating once your done; your energy and mood is refreshed, which is exactly what you need in a time like this. There was something I heard Jay Shetty say that resonated me; we make excuses and hate working out before and whilst we do it, but after? We are so alive and energised. So even if you’re not feeling it sometimes, try and push through to do even the smallest thing like a dance party in your room.

2. Hydration & Detox

A few months ago I decided to start my days without caffeine and substituted with green tea instead. I’ve always loved green tea, I usually have one every night anyway. It makes me feel a lot better and detoxes my system, so making the switch in the mornings too has been super beneficial. Another thing I love is hot lemon water or just lemon water in general. It’s great for digestion and detoxing, it’s also supposedly good for an energy boost! It’s basically just got a load of benefits for you so try adding it into your everyday!

2. Skincare

My skincare journey has been a long one but I’ve finally got into an amazing groove with it and found a routine that works perfectly for me, which you can watch on my YouTube channel. I also recently purchased a rose quartz roller and gua sha to up the ante on my routine; best decision ever. An everyday face massage? Yes, I think I will. It’s just working wonders for me. Also, if you’re looking to revamp your skincare I could not recommend The Ordinary products more! They are game changing. Try making sure your skin is hydrated and glowing from the inside out, it’s so important and such a luxury.

4. Dive Into Your Passions

For me lately, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying doing the things that I love like creating for this blog and YouTube channel, or planning content across all my platforms. I’ve just changed up my vibe a little bit and that’s so enjoyable for me. Another thing I’ve finally got back into is reading - again, I dropped off the wagon but I’m back and the best thing about reading is that it’s a perfect time to just unwind and zone out. Even just watching a movie or TV show (or Formula One on a weekend because let me tell you it’s the best), listening to music, drawing, cooking, whatever it may be that just brings you joy so easily, do it. It’s important that you take the time to just relax and do that by doing what you love.

5. Allow yourself to wallow in the dips

Everyone is guaranteed to have down days or lazy days or just days that are blah. For me I know that as a perfectionist I put a lot of pressure on myself to keep going even when I just don’t have the energy anymore. So lately I’ve learnt that it’s is completely okay to have a day where you don’t do a damn thing. Just sit around and binge watch Netflix, sleep, eat, do all the things your mind is telling you you shouldn’t. You shouldn’t punish yourself for having a day that is a nothing day. Sometimes we have to ride the wave of blah to comeback racing. So yeah, you feel like doing nothing one day? Absolutely bloody fine.

These are just a few things that instantly came to mind that I’m doing regularly right now to look after myself because let’s be honest, none of this has been easy. The most important task for us individually is to take care of ourselves, both mentally and physically. So do whatever you need to do to keep that energy kicking. I know it’s hard and trying at times, but find the little and good in every day.

I hope you’re all staying safe and well! Sending you lots of love,

Emily xx
