Happy 7 Years, Seventeen James! A Life Recap & Plans for the Future

Outfit: Shirt - Custom (similar here) / Skirt - H&M (old, similar here) / Shoes - Tony Bianco

Today marks the 7 year anniversary of this blog. It was seven years ago that this blog came to life, when I was encouraged at university to start one as a place to constantly write and share my passions. Since then, I've been running this blog (not as consistently as I would like) and have loved opening up about fashion, beauty and lifestyle. If anything, this space has brought me closer to fashion, not in just what I wear, but to the world of fashion. I love discussing fashion weeks, designers, trends and so on. For me this space is such an incredible creative output for that.

I'll be honest with you, I thought I would be in a different place with this blog by now, but as they say "life gets in the way". A lot has happened in the last 7 years; most importantly finishing my Undergrad in Journalism in 2017, and now just a week ago, I finished my Masters in Media & Communications. I haven't graduated yet, but all my coursework and dissertation are complete. I'm genuinely quite proud of myself, especially completing a degree during this pandemic.

Moreover, I've been back and forth between London and Colombo, and then just as I was about to return to London, COVID hit. So yeah, definitely things happened. We all spent countless days in lockdown over the last 18 months, or even more now, so life hasn't been smooth sailing.

That being said, creating content has definitely been such a wonderful output for me to not only enjoy my passions but to unwind... which is ironic since it's work in a way. I've been utterly grateful to have this blog for 7 years and only hope to have it for another 7 or more. I know I haven't had the trajectory that other bloggers or content creators have had, but I'm happy to continuously learn and grow, finding who I am and the kind of content I want to make as I go along.

I definitely think in recent months I have figured out where I want this to go and hopefully I can take it there. So I hope you continue on this journey with me as I learn and create more.I have such incredible plans and hope to make loads of different updates and in the near future, but in that time I'll continue to write and create. So follow along here, on my Instagram and my YouTube!

Thank you for sticking with me over these 7 years. I'm grateful for all of you who continue to support, read my words or admire my content. I wouldn't be here without you.

Here's to the future of Seventeen James.

Lots of love,

Emily

A Lockdown Life Update: How I’ve Been Feeling Lately

Outfit: Dress - Custom (similar here and here)/ Necklace - Topshop (old, similar here)

We are in the thick of lockdown (or “travel restrictions” as its been labelled) here in Sri Lanka and honestly, I’m kind of done with it which is completely unlike me. Last year lockdown, I was absolutely fine and happy but this one? I have no idea why but there’s something about this time around where I’m like “no thanks, I’m good without this.” It’s completely natural, I know that everyone’s probably felt this way at one point of another.

What has made it a little bit more rubbish this time around is that my energy levels have completely plummeted into the abyss. The last few months I was on a rocket to the moon; working out pretty much everyday, and I mean HIIT workouts, getting work done, being a busy bee. But now, I’m like... blah. And it absolutely sucks.

Anyone deal with this? You’re on a roll and you don’t think anything could stop you and then you just completely face plant to the floor? Raise your hand if you have or are feeling this way because I need to not feel guilty, haha.

I definitely went to bed last night saying “I need change” and in circumstances where you can’t change everything, you have to change something. So I switched up my routine a little bit. Now it’s only the afternoon here so I can’t tell you if this routine works, but one thing I will say is; change up the schedule, do not stick to the same mundane routine you’ve been in. Seems easier said than done when you’re in lockdown right? Well there’s just different things you can add and remove from your routine that might make it feel a little bit better.

Also, don’t forget that Mercury is in retrograde and if all else fails, blame your lack of energy, motivation and focus on that because we can all use a scapegoat at times.

So far here, lockdown is said to continue until June 21st, but even that is uncertain. Who knows what’ll happen in the coming days or weeks? All I’ll say is, if you’re feeling a bit blah, I’m definitely with you; you’re not alone. And remember it’s okay to feel like that, whether it’s a short or long period of time, just ride the wave of it. Sometimes you just have to. Look after yourself first before you push yourself too far.

I’m going to be following up this post with another this week on the things I’m doing to keep my energy refreshed. So stay tuned!

Until then, I hope you’re all staying safe and well. Sending you lots of love,

Emily xx

A WFH Outfit & A Little Life Update

Outfit: Top (old) - similar here / Trousers - Mango (similar here & here) / Earrings - Cataleyha LK

It’s been a little while since I last posted on here and it’s been eating me up in the back of my mind. But I have good reason for not posting on the blog; every since I started my Master’s degree, I’ve been swamped.

I’m already at the end of Week Four, about to start Week 5… I’m almost half way through a term. The time has flown. In between watching pre-recorded lectures, attending Zoom Q&As and Webinars, my time has been filled with endless reading. I mean pages upon pages and because I’m trying to be a good student, I’ve been reading every single bit of it (and then re-reading points that are too dense). But I’ve been enjoying every minute of it, more so than I thought. So I cannot complain. Nor can I put myself down for being the worst “blogger” in the world.

I’ve also been trying to brainstorm what to write about or share on here. I would love to know your thoughts because I’m currently having a creative block, which is the worst thing for me. I cannot handle when I can’t come up with creative ideas. Let me know what you’d like to see in the comments below!

On to the part you might be more interested to know; my outfit. I got these trousers from Mango about a month or so ago and I have been dying to wear them since. But since I haven’t really left the house lately, I thought it’s about time I put them on for a WFH/UFH (uni from home) look. I’ve paired them with this old oversized tee, which is super comfy and a super cute pair of earrings from a Sri Lankan brand I found on Instagram. I’ve actually bought a few jewellery pieces via Instagram from Sri Lankan based brands. I might just share those with you soon (I’ve got my eye on a few more pieces, so I’ll grab those first and then make a comprehensive post!).

Ooh, would you like to see “What I Wore This Week” types of posts? Or are they a bit of a bore? Also, if I’m only wearing leggings half the time that might be boring. Just let me know your thoughts. The more help I can get, the better.

Until next time, which should hopefully be next week.

Sending you lots of love and hoping you’re staying safe!

I Did The Keto Diet For A Month And Here's How It Went

Outfit: Top - Mango (size up for slouchy fit!) / Shorts - Custom

I'm not a diet person in the slightest. I usually get bored with it easily or just have too much of a sugar craving that I bail. I don't try diets out a lot, so when I decided to embark on the keto journey, I went into it thinking "I'll be done with it within a week". And now here we are, a month later and I have never ever been stricter with myself. It's a miracle.

I decided to do the keto diet at the beginning of August with my mum for a few reasons.

a.) I wanted to kickstart some extra weight loss.

b.) I wanted to test myself and cut carbs and sugar for a while.

c.) I thought, "hey, this may just help with my bloating".

So Mum and I decided to do it together, and honestly I'm glad that I had a partner in this because there were days I needed the motivation. But surprisingly there were not as many down days as I thought there would be. I thought I would be craving carbs and sugar, but I could survive without them. Or I had alternatives.

The Keto Diet kickstarts the body into ketosis, which is a metabolic process where the body uses fat as fuel for energy as opposed to carbs. This happens because you ultimately reduce your carb intake so then your body has to search for other fuel for you to go throughout the day.

So you cut carbs completely and I'm talking the complex carbs like pasta, rice, potatoes, carrots etc. Yep, even some vegetables because fun fact, they also hold carb levels that can be high. Another shocker? You can't have fruit. Next to no fruit, which sucked because I thought it would be my saving grace during sugar craving moments. But thank the heavens, you can have berries because they are low in "net carbs", which I'll explain in a moment. So strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are a yes on the diet.

Green veggies are your friends on this one, plus tomatoes and avocados. You can eat avocados like you life depends on it. The other shocker - cheese. I'll say it again, thank the heavens for cheese because it just made this diet all the more enjoyable. Also, butter and cream - a yes. Shocking again, I know. Of course you can also eat meat and seafood, it's recommended that you do alongside nuts, eggs and coconut. Check out the full recommended list here so I don't drone on.

And so, back at the beginning of August I started this diet and let me tell you it wasn't as bad or hard as I thought it would be, so much so that I kind of don't want it to end.

Now for any of my friends who are reading this, know I have been on the diet and beg me to stop because they want me to eat junk with them (especially you, Mehr), don't worry I am... kind of. Of course it's important to have balance and I plan on eating a big bowl of pasta one of these days, but I've really seen and felt the effects on my body, which I want to continue.

I can't tell you in numbers whether I've lost weight because go figure, I don't have a scale. BUT, I feel it and see it in the mirror. Honestly, scales sometimes drive me a little insane because the number will be more than I think and I'll just go into a downward spiral. Yet if I see change in the mirror, major visible change, then I know whatever I'm doing it working and that's happened over this month on keto.

That's not to say I didn't have my down days.

Around the middle of the second week, I had a slight case of what they call "the keto flu"; not actually a flu but you may feel a little bit nauseous, slightly ill in the "cold" department, very low on energy and so on. On the day I did feel like that, I kind of had to break the protocol of the diet and have a touch of sugar. And after that day, I was completely fine again. Of course your body is going through a lot within that first week or so as it kickstarts into this new metabolic process, so if you do decide to take on the keto diet, don't be afraid when you feel a bit crap. Just modify for the day and make sure you look after yourself first. It's just a diet, it's not your life.

Just a few shameless meal pics to remember I did this diet. 1. Seed Cafe Hummus & Pumpkin Bowl (minus the carbs) / 2. Plus Nine Four Minced Lamb & Salad (I did not eat the tortilla at the bottom) / 3. Cheers Pub Chicken, Broccoli & Avocado Salad

Look I'm no nutritionist or heath expert, I'm just a girl who wanted to try a diet out to see if it would help her and it did! But I do want to warn you to check with your regular health expert before you do this diet. It's important to put your health first and make your body is okay to go into a new process.

But I will say that I enjoyed the diet to the point where I don't want to end it completely. Of course, I know that the diet needs to be broken and I'm doing that now. However, I plan on keeping up a regular routine of keto, whereby I reduce my complex carb intake to 2 days, 3 days max a week because that works for my digestion without completely bloating me up. I'm also going to keep the sugar intake low too, but if I do I'm going to choose fruits over chocolate. Good God, did I just say that? Did I just write that out on the internet? Ooh, this diet has changed me.

I don't think I'd ever say I enjoyed a diet, but this one came pretty close to enjoyment and it made me a lot stricter. I learnt how to go out and eat comfortably and happily, which sometimes can be hard on diets! This was one was a lot easier to work around so that's a plus. Also, having a partner to do this with kept up the morale, so thank you Mumma.

So if you were considering the keto diet in your future, here's my recommendations: first, check with your GP or nutritionist to make sure you're in the right capacity to take on the restrictive diet. Secondly, have something or someone to keep you going on it. Third, make sure you're comfortable with the food options you have available to you. And if you don't enjoy it, don't do it. It's not worth it if you are literally forcing yourself to do it.

There's my experience for you. If you want to know more or want recipes that we tried, let me know! I'd love to share more.

Sending you lots of love and hoping you're staying safe,

Emily xx

Travel Diary: Trincomalee & Jaffna, Sri Lanka

I'm terribly sorry that I haven't been able to update the blog lately and I have my reasons:
1. I didn't take my laptop with me on my little adventure to the north of Sri Lanka.
2. Internet connections are not as strong and not everywhere, which also meant my updates on instagram, too, were limited.
3. I was too busy having fun over Sinhala & Tamil New Year and I'm not even sorry :)

My week away was because of the New Year Celebrations in the country, so my brother had school holidays and we took the opportunity to go to one of my favourite places in the world, Trincomalee, and a place I've always wanted to visit, Jaffna. This post is mainly a little recap of the trip with some photos! (Not so much a fashion post, but those shall be coming).

TRINCOMALEE

Situated in the north-east, Trincomalee is a tourist destination if you love relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun, reading a book and even do a little bit of diving. It's paradise to be honest. I've been going to Trinco every year (sometimes twice a year) just to have a break from the Colombo City life and relax. I stay at the Jungle Beach Resort by Uga Escapes and honestly it is the most perfect place. It's right at the end of a road stretch of hotels, meaning that it's secluded with a private beach and your own little villas as rooms. The food is fantastic, 5 star, like honestly some of the best of eaten and I'm a foodie. It's a silent paradise and I love it. As well as being at the resort, we drove around visiting holy places, sightseeing in the town, taking photos and getting ice cream. We were lucky enough to see a herd of elephants by the side of the road, and I love elephants so I flipped out! Something that I loved though, was the fashion. Across Sri Lanka, it's so beautiful to see that women wear sarees and salwar kameez on a daily basis and they come in all colours, vibrant too, with beautiful embroidery. My mum and I see these traditional outfits as something to wear on special occasions because it takes a lot of effort to dress them, but these ladies wear them day in and day out! It's stunning, plus they do all their daily errands in them, such as riding a motorcycle (see picture below). We also came across a Second World War Cemetery which looked completely out of place in the area, made it seem like we were in another country because of how neat and perfect it looked. I never get tired of Trincomalee, there's always something new to find and I suggest to all to go there if you ever visit Sri Lanka.

JAFFNA

Jaffna is a war-torn area that has gotten back on its feet after years of civil war. It has only been rather recently that this northern region was opened to the public to be visited, but still with strict security from the army and navy. We were lucky enough to stay in the army area with escorts and security, which was surreal. My family and some family friends stayed in the Commander's Bungalow, which apparently is the house which the President of the country stays in when he visits Jaffna. It was a beautiful modern house that looked out onto a never-ending sea. A highlight of our trip to Jaffna was taking a navy boat to a small island called Delft Island which is home to a small population of Tamil people and has remains of various old colonial buildings as well as wild Dutch horses (I think, don't quote me on that). It's interesting to see because I'd never heard anything about this mini-island and so we were able to see the majority of its landscape. On our way back from the island we visited Fort Hammenhiel, an old prison in the middle of the sea, which is now a hotel. The cells were still in tact and the majority of the prison had not been changed, apart from rooms being added to it. It was like a small castle, but had a tinge of darkness because of its history. I was able to visit Point Pedro, the northernmost point of Sri Lanka, which you can see in a cheesy little picture of me below. Upon entering Jaffna, there was a war memorial for a 26 year old Corporal who protected the Elephant Pass Camp in 1991, a Sinhalese Army Camp, when a bulldozer-tank filled with explosives was approaching. He did so by throwing grenades at the vehicle, and in turn, loosing his life while doing so. It was a very touching story to learn and to hear of the dedication of such a young soldier was inspiring. My first trip to Jaffna was honestly brilliant and I can't wait to go there again soon and explore some more.
