Happy 7 Years, Seventeen James! A Life Recap & Plans for the Future

Outfit: Shirt - Custom (similar here) / Skirt - H&M (old, similar here) / Shoes - Tony Bianco

Today marks the 7 year anniversary of this blog. It was seven years ago that this blog came to life, when I was encouraged at university to start one as a place to constantly write and share my passions. Since then, I've been running this blog (not as consistently as I would like) and have loved opening up about fashion, beauty and lifestyle. If anything, this space has brought me closer to fashion, not in just what I wear, but to the world of fashion. I love discussing fashion weeks, designers, trends and so on. For me this space is such an incredible creative output for that.

I'll be honest with you, I thought I would be in a different place with this blog by now, but as they say "life gets in the way". A lot has happened in the last 7 years; most importantly finishing my Undergrad in Journalism in 2017, and now just a week ago, I finished my Masters in Media & Communications. I haven't graduated yet, but all my coursework and dissertation are complete. I'm genuinely quite proud of myself, especially completing a degree during this pandemic.

Moreover, I've been back and forth between London and Colombo, and then just as I was about to return to London, COVID hit. So yeah, definitely things happened. We all spent countless days in lockdown over the last 18 months, or even more now, so life hasn't been smooth sailing.

That being said, creating content has definitely been such a wonderful output for me to not only enjoy my passions but to unwind... which is ironic since it's work in a way. I've been utterly grateful to have this blog for 7 years and only hope to have it for another 7 or more. I know I haven't had the trajectory that other bloggers or content creators have had, but I'm happy to continuously learn and grow, finding who I am and the kind of content I want to make as I go along.

I definitely think in recent months I have figured out where I want this to go and hopefully I can take it there. So I hope you continue on this journey with me as I learn and create more.I have such incredible plans and hope to make loads of different updates and in the near future, but in that time I'll continue to write and create. So follow along here, on my Instagram and my YouTube!

Thank you for sticking with me over these 7 years. I'm grateful for all of you who continue to support, read my words or admire my content. I wouldn't be here without you.

Here's to the future of Seventeen James.

Lots of love,

Emily

How To Dress From The Waist Up When Working From Home (& a Social Distancing Update)

Outfit: Shirt - Marks & Spencer // Necklace - Old

Happy Monday everyone!

I gather that most of us are now in self-isolation, quarantine, social distancing and or on lockdown wherever you may be. I hope that you are taking the precautions necessary for yourself, your family and your friends. It’s important that we do make the right choices at this time. A little update from my end of the world; here in Sri Lanka we are on full lockdown, living on a curfew. Since Friday 6pm, no one has been allowed to go out anywhere at all (people who have have been caught by police and arrested). This was meant to end this morning at 6am, however it was extended on Saturday evening until tomorrow at 6am and curfew will begin again at 2pm tomorrow (Tuesday 24th). It’s quite crazy if I’m honest. I don’t think I have ever been in a curfew lockdown for this long before, nor has my Mum; she said that even during the Civil War here there wasn’t this much of a curfew, nor was there one after the terror attacks last year.

So it’s very surreal and silent, but there’s beauty in this. I’m so lucky to live in a house here that is quite high up and has a view of a lake right in front of me. The area is actually known as a bird sanctuary and nature reserve, so all the birds are chirping, flying around and coming to the garden, the sky is so clear, there’s a wonderful breeze; it’s just luscious. Because of this we’ve been spending more time in the garden, soaking in what it has to offer. Our evening tea time ritual has now permanently moved outside into the setting sun.

Of course, like anyone, we’re itching to leave the house even just for a walk or drive, but we have to do what we have to and make the sacrifices. It honestly wakes you up to the everyday simple luxuries we have on a regular basis, doesn’t it? We take so many things for granted and this time allows us to reflect on that.

I hope you’re all keeping in touch with friends and loved ones in any way that you can! Make sure you check in on everyone, especially if you know anyone working in jobs that won’t allow for social distancing or isolation, especially those in the medical field who are risking their lives every day to make sure that people get the care that they need. I want to take a moment to shoutout to one of my best friends, Grace, who is a paramedic and works for the NHS – you are a true force girl and I love you! Stay safe!

But here's a little something on fashion as promised...

As you can see, I’ve attached an image to the top of this post and it’s for a purpose I promise. I thought I’d show you the easiest way to dress from the waist up, if you’re working from home and have to take meetings or conference calls but you can’t be bothered getting fully dressed. Here’s my easy option: grab your favourite shirt, preferably a loose option that you’re comfortable in, and pair that with a piece of statement jewellery. With my M&S linen shirt (similar), I’ve put on an old statement gothic style chunky necklace that just brings a little life to my “half outfit”. By adding a piece of jewellery, it’ll make you look more put together (even if you’re wearing sweatpants under the screen).

In terms of beauty, keep it simple because you don’t need a full face at home; keep your skincare routine going and maybe add a few touches of concealer, a wisp of mascara and a blushing of colour to the lips. Remember, you’re working but you are also at home so you can still be comfortable and get away with less than your average day at work.
It’s as simple as that! It doesn’t take much but it’ll help you give the illusion that you are ready for a day of work. Which I hope you are even whilst you’re self-isolating!

Oh and btw, check these out!

Something I’ve been enjoying that I want to share with you is the WHO and Global Citizen organised Instagram Live Concerts from your favourite artists everyday. There’s two concerts a day for about half an hour and it’s so amazing. What more could you want than listening to your favourite artists serenading you? Starting with Chris Martin and John Legend, now Charlie Puth, Niall Horan, Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello and many more have done them now and you can re-watch them on YouTube too. Also head to globalcitizen.org/coronavirus to lend your voice!

If you want something fun to do with the family, I highly suggest you download the “Heads Up” app. We have been having such a laugh as a family playing this in the evenings, screaming at each other describing the different people or things in categories and we end up crying with laughter by the end! So definitely go and play that, along with all the other board games you might have lying around.

What have you all been up to? I’d love to know how you’ve been spending your time and what you’re suggestions are for inevitable boredom! Let me know in the comments below and let’s get a list together. Also, if anyone gets bored or lonely and needs an extra person to chat to, DM me on Instagram! I’m happy to talk to anyone who needs it. Let’s keep each other going through these uncertain times.

Sending you lots of love as always,

Emily xx

The Easy & Sexy Valentine's Look You Probably Already Have In Your Wardrobe

Whether you're going out with your significant other or heading for girls night, you'll probably want to be dressed up for Love Day. Plus it's a Friday night, so you might just be going out. While you can doll up with all the love themed pieces out there or the colours of the day (reds and pinks), I personally think simple is best.

Grab your favourite little black dress and dress it up with your favourite blazer and a pair of different coloured mules for the ideal look. It's perfect for drinks, dinner or even a little dance.

Outfit: Dress - Old / Blazer - Next (old, similar) / Shoes - Tony Bianco (similar)

A LBD will never steer you wrong; it's fun, versatile and sexy - which is all you want for a date night. A blazer on top gives you that chic edge, that's totally on trend and again is an easy pick. You can pair whatever shoes you like with this look, but I personally right now love a pair of mules or slingbacks in a contrasting colour for a pop. Match your bag colour to your shoes, add a pair of diamond-esque drop earrings and voila! The perfect look.

In case you're out for a little something new, here's the best picks off the high street:

How are you spending Valentine's this year? Do you have a hot date or a night in with your beau? Or are you going for a girls night instead? I hope you are all showered with love, whatever you do.

Lots of Love,

Emily xx

What To Wear To An Asian Wedding, By A Desi Girl

Photography from my main hype woman, Mum.

When it comes to Asian weddings, outfits are a big deal. Everything from hair to make up to accessories to the actual piece that you're wearing, it takes a good deal of prep. Anyone who hasn't gone to an Asian wedding would think the sari is your only option but it's not - there's shalwar kameez, lehengas and many others which I won't even go into naming.

Why is this relevant? Well, I went to my first wedding of my generation. The last time I went to a wedding was when I was in my early-teens. One of my high school friends was the first of us to get married, so of course when I was invited to the wedding I was pumped. First wedding as an adult! And what came to my mind immediately? Outfit.

Also being a Desi girl (from the Indian subcontinent but lives/grows up abroad), it gives me the chance to fully embrace my Asian side.

I was going to go with a lehenga, but then I found a whole trunks worth of saris that I already had with some that have never been worn. This beautiful black number was sitting in a box and was pining to be worn, so of course I went with the colour I reach for most.

Outfit: Sari - Local Purchase // Earrings - Custom // Shoes - Charles & Keith (similar) // Bag - from Japan

When it comes to saris, they can be quite the handful, literally. You've got bolts of material draped around your body that you've got to carry around you and you have to find the right way to wear them without anything falling apart. Here's what I did differently for the first time - I (meaning my Mum) cinched in the sari and pinned it to be more like a wrap dress style, but also give me more definition and be so much easier to wear. Honestly, this made all the more difference because I didn't have too much fabric to hold onto in my arm and I didn't trip over anything.*

*though I may have got my heel caught on the back a little... (it happens okay, I'm sorry).

I paired the black sari with a simple au-natural make up look with a pop of a red lip - Fenty Beauty of course. I pinned my hair back in a knot style bun with my short layers framing face. Full hair and make up rundown coming on the blog soon for you!

Finished off with Charles & Keith court shoes, a little blue embroidered Japanese bag for a contrast and blue bauble style drop earrings, et voila! Wedding ready.

It was such a wonderful night to celebrate the first of my friends to get married. Oh my, I've entered that stage of my life now. We're all growing up. *screams quietly*. What's your go-to for an Asian wedding? Are you a sari girl or would you opt for another traditional look? Or even, non-traditional? Also what do you think about seeing more traditional looks on the blog. This is the first time I'm sharing something like this, so if you want to see more, let me know!

The Iconic Vintage Bags Worth Investing In This Year

Vintage designer bags are having their moment right now. Whether it's digging them out of your mum or grandma's closet, or even your own, or purchasing secondhand, older versions of iconic bags are making their wave in the fashion world. Investing in a vintage bag is a big decision and I thought I'd make it a little easier. I've chosen the 5 iconic designers and a classic bag of theirs that won't just be perfect for 2020, but for life. Read why I've chosen these bags below and click the images to shop now!

All bags sourced from Vestiaire Collective, The Vintage Bar & WhatGoesAroundNYC.

"It's not a bag, it's a Baguette" - Carrie Bradshaw

One of the iconic bags that was made its mark most notably through Sex & The City, the Fendi Baguette has definitely made it's comeback. With the Italian fashion house revamping the style, the original styling cannot be ignored! A vintage version of this bag in your wardrobe will have you feeling very Carrie.

The Dior Saddle Bag

The Saddle bag is everywhere and honestly, I understand why now. It's a simple, classic style that looks utterly chic. Whilst the newer styles have their sleek leather looks or reworked embroidered logo design, the vintage styles are so cool that they are worth investing in. If you're going for a Vintage Dior Saddle, go for one with a unique design or embroidered details to have something truly special.

The Louis Vuitton Pouchette

Maybe not what you thought I'd pick for Louis Vuitton, but this style has always been one of my favourites. I love the Pouchette, it's super cute and small and very 90's, especially in bold colourways. I personally love the style from Vestiaire Collective with the chain strap, it's perfect for 2020.

The Gucci Hobo

The Gucci Hobo bag has been reworked in various ways and it's still a classic. I absolutely love this one and my Mum has three in different stylings (which will be mine one day... yessss), and honestly they each have qualities that make them amazing. Also if you buy a bigger size, you will fit absolutely everything in them. No lie, they are Mary Poppins worthy.

The Chanel Classic

via THE VINTAGE BAR

The Chanel Classic is the perfect bag to invest in first if you've not bought a designer bag before. Of course, buying a brand spanking new one is ideal because it's only ever been yours that way and they are rather pricey. But there are some stunning vintage options that you can't say no to. I mean the two above aren't anything compared to what's available online but if I spent any more time looking, I'd never write this post.

What bag would you chose? I personally might go for a Fendi baguette, maybe because I want to channel some Carrie energy. What other iconic styles would you invest in? Let me know in the comments below.

The 5 Things I've Learnt From Having A Blog For 5 Years

It's been five years to the day since I started Seventeen James.

5 years.

I started this blog on the proposal of starting a blog by our lecturers during first year of uni. They told us to start a blog on whatever we wanted so we could continuously write, share ideas or work. Just something to keep us creative. Starting a fashion blog was the first thing that popped into my head; 1. I love fashion and would love to have a career in it. 2. I don't think there's anything else that I would enjoy consistently writing about other than fashion (maybe music, but it'd be a big time fangirl blog.)

So I started this. Seventeen James. The name came from my house number in England and my brother's middle name. It had an instant ring to it, rather than it being a simple fashion orientated name. And hey, I thought it would sound really good for a brand one day (who knows what the future holds).

5 years on, I've been on and off blogging. I've been trying my best, well somewhat, and I've tried to make a career out of it. I'm still trying to do that, so bare with me. But I've had my fair share of setbacks, lessons learnt, some still to be learnt and trying to find my place in the crazy world of fashion and "influencer". I still don't like this word, but it's what everyone is using now, so *insert shrug shoulder emoji*.
Outfit: Fishnet Kaftan - Custom / Vest & Leggings - Primark / Shoes  - Dune / Earrings - New Look / Ring - Custom

As I move into my fifth year of blogging, I'm deciding to go into a relaunch of Seventeen James. I'm planning on being remarkably dedicated to this space, as I've tried to more of lately. Now the website isn't actually going to be relaunched yet, I'm planning that for hopefully early 2020 with a whole new look and a better sense of me. But for now, I am relaunching my mindset. And to do so, I have to look at what I've learnt over the past 5 years.

1. Nothing is ever perfect.
Isn't that the truth. I am a perfectionist, always have been and probably always will. If there's something slightly wrong, I'll lose it on the inside. I've had to learn the hard way that nothing is ever going to come out exactly as I picture it in my head. Good things take time. Sometimes, 5 years. Definitely more really. Patience is so key and you just have to go with what you have. Use what's in front of you to the best of your ability and don't beat yourself up. Nothing's ever perfect.

2. Not everything is going to suit you.
Trends come out every day. There's always something new to try, maybe everyone jumps on that wagon but you don't have to. When it comes to fashion and style, be your own individual person. Don't try things on for the sake of likes. In a world where fast fashion is taking over, don't be one to give in to that. Yes, some things you will absolutely love like everyone else and that is completely fine. But if you're not 100% set on something, don't waste your time. Find where you stand, even if that's outside of the crowd, and let that be your guide. Personal style is so important because if you don't really like it, it'll show.

3. Capturing image content can be a pain in the arse.
Take for example these photos you see here. Taken on my 8 year old Nikon that really needs an upgrade, a wonky tripod and self-timer. "Emily, why don't you have a remote control for your camera?" I do, it's just broken. This was a pain and a half to get done. Of course normally you can always ask a helping hand, but sometimes there's no one around. I love self-portrait photography because it makes me feel more comfortable about taking pictures of me. Sometimes people don't get the right angles or light and blah, so you look to do it yourself. Even then, it might not work out. Capturing quality content that satisfies you takes time. I've learnt that the hard way and I'm still not there yet. Don't be too picky about it. If you feel like you look good and you want to document your look, snap that on an iPhone picture and post it. Who cares?! It's your space.

4. You might not always get likes or follows or readership.
Boy do I know about this one. After 5 years, I'm still only at 1092 followers on Instagram, I probably only get sometimes 20 reads on a blogpost and my Twitter following is low. The majority of those people following, liking and reading (probably even reading this post) are family and friends. I'm 90% on that one (if I'm wrong, let a girl know). It's a hard pill to swallow. You want the success, you are driven, yet you're still not where you want to be. It's another one of those things that takes time. But persevere. Keep writing and posting, even if no one looks at it because at the end of the day, you've done it for yourself. Nothing happens overnight.

5. Writing, about whatever you want, is therapeutic.
Maybe it hasn't been your day, your week, your month or even your year (yes, that's the Friends theme tune). You've lost sight of where you're going, what you're doing, what's next. Having something to take your mind of that is so, so good for you. Seventeen James has been the space where I can just write about fashion, beauty or lifestyle the way I want to. It channels my energy into positivity. I keep it up as a hobby/career but also to detox. If you can find somewhere to write - anything you want; news, plans, dreams, creative writing - then do so and use it. Even if it isn't a blog and instead a diary or journal, a word document on your laptop or the notes app in your phone. Just go for it.

In the five years I've been here, I haven't done everything I want to do nor have I come close to creating the content I want to. But that's about to change. I'm going to start being more experimental, so I hope you stick around to see the outcome. There's a whole bunch of ideas written down in my notebook and phone, so I'm on the path to start creating them and have fun. Thank you for being here and reading all my nonsense for the past 5 years. I hope you stick around for the years to come. So here's to you, Seventeen James - Happy Birthday! Here's to a new beginning.

Lots of Love,

Emily xx

Sneaker Styling Is A Hot Trend - Here's How I'm Doing It

When it comes to the chunky sneaker trend (or as I will forever call them: ugly dad sneakers), I'm not all for it. I think that's one pieces I will consciously never give into. I'm sorry if you like them, sadly I just don't. But I do like wearing sneakers, especially Jordans and Converse.

I probably only own about 4 pairs but I'm starting to think I should have more. I love trainers for ease and comfort, especially when I'm walking around a lot. I've got used to pairing them with skirts and dresses and personally I think it looks super chic.

Outfit: Dress - Custom / Shoes - Jordans

Right now it's all the rage to pair your sneakers with any outfit you chose. My preference right now is definitely with floaty maxi or baby doll dresses. It gives edge to the super feminine, whilst not looking out of sorts.

This black maxi is a custom one that is super comfy (and has pockets), so I thought it would easily pair with these nude Jordans (my brother's, which he grew out of so it's a total result for me). Accessorise with pearl details and a mini bag, then you're set with a street-style ready look.

Shop Jordans:

What's your ideal way of styling sneakers? Are you an ugly dad trainer type or do you prefer other types? I'd love to know your thoughts on the style. Let me know in the comments below.
